A disabled person, supporting disabled people
My name is Sophiia deFaia and I am a second-year Psychology student. I have both a physical and mental health disability, and I know that I am the right person to represent you and your needs as a student. I have a list of primary concerns from my peers, and I hope that there is at least something relevant in here for all of you who vote. I have two main areas which I want to make a real difference.
Learning:
I want to liaise with the University to ensure that all students in receipt of DSA get automatic Extenuating Circumstances time for all of their assignments. As I’m sure you know, suffering from physical or mental health issues can take up a lot of energy, and health is more of a priority than submitting assignments on time. I will work alongside the University on this matter, and make sure that this issue is fully addressed by the governing bodies responsible.
I also want to work with Access Solent to make sure that EU students are properly supported, as they are not entitled to DSA. This might mean working to improve academic support, or setting up policies for the university to adhere to in the future.
Life:
I propose that students should be able to access the Library from the Andrews building, where the Costa is. For people with disabilities, walking those extra couple of minutes around the outside of the building can mean the difference between a good day, and a moderately difficult one. I will liaise with the University to make sure this is something that can be changed.
I am here for you!
If you vote for me, I can assure you that I will be a present and open Disabilities Officer. I will make sure that I am easily contactable, and I will personally help with any issues you may be having during your time at Solent. I will be making sure that my details are available on the Student Union website, the Student Hub, and in as many corridors as the University allows me to!
Other plans include:
- Create a dedicated outdoor healing space on campus
- Making sure Mentoring sessions are easily booked and run smoothly
- Reconfiguring lecture theatres to eventually all have stand-alone desks
