I believe giving everyone the same opportunities regardless of background, beliefs and preferences. I would love the opportunity to represent WP at our university.
At Solent 70% of our students are the first in their families to go to university, which in itself can pose challenges. Many of our students from disadvantaged backgrounds, lower income households and other under-represented groups may have faced barriers to entry higher education. Now they are here they could face more due to unconscious bias, I want to make sure opportunities are equal for all between different under-represented groups of students.
I have been involved in several projects regarding widening participation. Such as the Race Equality Charter, which aims to improve the representation, progression and success of minority ethnic students and staff within higher education. This charter provides a framework for universities to identify and self-reflect on institutional and cultural barriers standing in the way of minority ethnic staff and students. The aim behind widening participation is to ensure that student bodies at universities reflect the diversity represented in wider society. These students might include: Young people from low-income backgrounds, BME or those returning to learning as mature students.
If recollected my mission will be to collaborate with other student officers creating the change you want to see.
