More about Student Council

An official student council meeting is where decisions are made, ones that require a formal vote and record: budget approvals, changes to the constitution or other policies, verifying officer election results.

The Student Council is made up of elected representatives from across the university. These are:

  • The three Solent Students' Union Sabbatical Officers

  • The SU Volunteer Officers: Postgraduate StudentsOfficer, Trans Students Officer, Warsash Maritime Liasion Officer, Womens Students Officer, ABMO Students Officer, LGBT+ Students Officer, Disabilities Students Officer and International Students Officer.

  • Department Reps: Art and Media, Business and Law, Film and Media, Science and Engineering, Social Science and Nursing, Sport and Health

  • Student Voice Coordinator to clerk the meeting

  • A student to be the Chair of Student Council

Submitting motions

Motions passed at Student Council direct the work of the SU. You just need a proposer and a seconder to send a motion to Student Council for discussion, and any student can do it.

If you've never submitted a motion before, it can be confusing to know what steps need to be taken. You can refer to our student guide to submitting motions to help you with this process.

Once you are ready, to submit a motion, please click here.

If you’d like to know more about the format of Council motions, or have other questions about submitting one, email student.voice@solent.ac.uk

Debates and amendments

After a motion is introduced by its proposer, there is an opportunity for questions about it and debate. Amendments to motions can be submitted in advance of the meeting. More detail about this is available in the our by-laws.

Substantial amendments must be submitted to hannah.piatkiewicz@solent.ac.uk by noon on the day of the Council meeting, except in the case of amendments to emergency motions which may be submitted up until the start of the meeting.

Student ideas

There are no ideas to display.

Any student can submit an idea to the SU by using the ideas list above. If the idea gets more than 10 votes/likes, this will then be discussed at the next Student Council meeting.
