Volunteering – painting room

Recently students at Solent volunteered to go and paint the walls of the new Sensory Room for Service Users at Southampton Day Centre.

The original Sensory room was shared with a gym space, which did not create a calming environment for the relaxation sessions.

After having a move around in the Day Centre, the computer suite was stripped and moved to make space for a room dedicated to the Sensory room.

The room overlooks the gardens outside and the theme for the mural was to reflect the environment outside.

The volunteering opportunity was advertised to students and over ten students were interested in the opportunity.

Six students volunteered their time over four days from Tuesday 30th May to Friday 2nd June.

Four of the students are part of the Arts and Crafts society and one Warsash cadet also took part. The students who attended were Lewis Cleminson (VP Employability and Engagement and part of Arts and Crafts Society), Åsa Andersson– Foreign exchange student, (part of Arts and Crafts Society), Jim Weller (Arts and Crafts Society), Anna Pechocova (Foreign exchange student, Arts and Crafts Society), Ruxil Singh (Warsash Cadet) and Mollie Tuck (SSAGO Society).

The Volunteers thoroughly enjoyed their time supporting the Day Centre, and the staff and service users were very welcoming and grateful.

The Staff and Service users popped in regularly and were extremely happy with the results.

Paul Smith, Project Officer at Southampton Day Services said;

"We were in desperate need of updating the Sensory Room for something more appropriate but with a very limited budget. I was so excited after initial conversations with Rachel when she said she thought she could get a team together and come up with something. The end result has exceeded my expectations. It just looks so good, and all in 4 days work, I am very impressed. I’ve had lots of positive comments from the staff team, and most importantly our Service Users love it. It really has made a positive difference to the feel of our sessions within the room. We cannot thank the volunteers enough for all of their hard work, especially Solent Students' Union for organising the whole thing so efficiently. We all really appreciate it."

Students have told us that they would be interested in other opportunities like this. Interested in volunteering at Solent? Email for more information or to suggest a volunteering opportunity.
