Free taxi service available for Solent students to get home after late-night study returns for winter
Solent Students’ Union is thrilled to announce the return of Safe Solent for 2022/2023, starting on Monday 21st November at 4pm.
Safe Solent is a free taxi service that all Solent University students can use to get home after a late night or early morning study session at Solent Library, at East Park Terrace.
The scheme is run by Solent Students’ Union in partnership with Southampton’s biggest taxi company, Radio Taxis (Southampton), and is part of the Union’s mission to make students feel safer in the city.
Safe Solent operates from Monday to Friday, between 6pm to 6am during the winter months and 9pm to 6am in the summer months, in conjunction with the 24/7 openings hours at the university library.
Students will be dropped directly to their door if the live in specific areas in Southampton, including the Polygon, West Quay, Bevois Valley, Ocean Village, Portswood, Shirley, Freemantle and more.
Steph Stangroom, Head of Student Wellbeing at Solent Students’ Union, said: “We are very excited to announce the return of Safe Solent. Safe Solent has been running for years and it is one of our most popular services.
“Students, as well as their friends and families, feel comforted that the service is there to take them straight from the library to their front door, which is then paid for by Solent Students’ Union.
"We want our students to feel safer, without having to compromise on any aspect of university life, including their studies, especially during the winter months when the days are shorter, and it gets dark much earlier. I want to thank Radio Taxis Southampton for helping us with this.
“This is part of an on-going and wider campaign to increase the overall student safety in the area, and more initiatives will be shared very soon.”
