Our Year So Far

Your Students’ Union has done a lot in the past few months. So today we’re going to round up our year so far; looking back at what we’ve achieved and looking forward to the next chapter.

First up, we saw a 50% increase in the number of societies at Solent this year. As we shared in this recent article, it is clear that the benefits of joining a society whilst at university go way past just a bit of fun. We are now seeing a trend for society members landing graduate jobs due to their extra activates. So, we are delighted to see a jump in the number of societies! Not only is this great for the community at Solent, but it could also lead to opportunities in the future for our students.

With the rise in societies overall, we have also seen the number of society memberships rise. We now have over 800 active memberships & that number is growing all the time. If you were thinking of joining a society, there couldn’t be a better time. With new societies starting up regularly and more new members every day, check out our Societies Page or visit The Welcome Centre for more information.

We are also very proud to say that the Night Bus service is being regularly used & loved by our students. The Night Bus has made hundreds of trips this year so far, making sure students from all across the Southampton area get home safely - for free! Remember to follow our Twitter account for any updates about the service.

When it comes to fundraising, we are delighted to say that this year’s Puppy Room raised a whopping £389 for Hearing Dogs for the Deaf. This money has given us the opportunity to sponsor our very own SU puppy; Juno. You can read more about Juno in this article. It’s great to know your £389 is being put to good use, keeping Juno in tennis balls and dog chews for a whole year!

This year we were also able to bring you two opportunities to ask the Vice Chancellor your questions. As your Students’ Union, we think it’s important that we are able to hold the university accountable to you. So being able to ask the Vice Chancellor your questions live is something we’d like to continue throughout the year.

In the year, so far, we have also had 515 Elected Course Reps. Course Reps are vital in helping link students and academic staff. They provide students with a spokesperson to represent their views & give the Students’ Union the information they need on issues facing students and allow us to campaign on your behalf. So having 515 Course Reps on board with making a happier Solent University is one of our greatest achievements.

Take a look at the infographic above to see what other things we’ve been up to. We’d also like to know what would you like to see happening at your Students’ Union, in the year to come? If you’ve got any suggestions please reach out over social media & we’d be happy to help. Find us on Facebook or Twitter.
