With waving goodbye to your Sabbatical Officers 17/18, and welcoming your new Sabb team 18/19, we are looking back at some of Hanna, Lewis and Naomi’s key achievements.
Your VP Welfare & Community 17/18 spent time working on practical solutions to welfare issues affecting Solent students. One of Hanna’s greatest achievements is securing HEFCE £50K funding for projects looking at how religion and sexuality interact. Hanna has also worked to help Solent Students’ Union to commit to taking a harm reduction approach to student drug use. Hanna also lobbied the university to commit to many evidence-based recommendations around mental health & sexual harassment. She was also part of setting up university-wide working groups for both issues; such as Bystander Intervention training & the mental health advisor role creation.
During his time as VP Education 17/18, Lewis fought for changes in education that would benefit all Solent University students. He took the lead in keeping Graduation 2018 guest tickets free and pushed for the university to start a review into their graduation costs. Lewis took time to support the development of the course reps system. He oversaw the introduction of school reps and a more robust way of student representatives feeding into the universities decision-making process by having a new student committee starting next academic year. Lewis was appointed as a deputy chair for a subject group panel in the governments teaching excellence framework (TEF) subject pilots that took place this year. Lewis has made a direct influence on the future of higher education in the UK.
In her hands-on approach to your VP Employability & Engagement 17/18 role Naomi organised multiple Puppy Rooms in aid of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and raised over £500 to support the Unions' new hearing dog Juno. Naomi also supported societies by bringing them various resources including a brand new 'SocStore' (an out of hours society locker space), a new collaborative Student Media office and a better store facility for Live Events Society. Naomi also took the lead in running the Union Awards; the pinnacle award ceremony of the student year where recognition was given to our students and societies for their amazing work.
We’re excited at the Union for the next stage in our journey, but we can’t deny that we’ll, of course, miss Hanna, Lewis & Naomi.
