Solent Decides By-Election 2021

This is your chance to apply to be and elect your next student representatives at for the 2021-22 academic year. Decide who will be your voice at Solent University on issues from equality, support and mental health to accommodation, nightlife and societies at both a local and national level. All positions available are voluntary, part time roles which focus on raising the voice and profile of selected student & liberation groups. Apprentice Officer

The Apprentice Students’ Officer acts as the primary representative of all students at Solent University enrolled on an apprenticeship course within the university, Students’ Union and wider community. They ensure that the voices of all apprentices are heard on the issues they face and that their voices are taken into account in decision making at Solent University.

ABMO Students' Officer

The BME Students' Officer acts as the primary student representative of black and minority ethnic (BME) students at Solent within the university, Students’ Union and wider community. They ensure that the voices of BME students are heard on the issues they face and that their voices are taken into account in decision making at Solent University.

ABMO Students Officer Role Description  

Volunteer Officer positions are unpaid roles within Solent Students' Union. Volunteer Officers work to proactively represent the rights of the students in their specific student groups. They ensure that the Students’ Union considers these students’ views and needs and undertakes projects and campaigns to support their student groups.   

The role’s time commitment varies according to how much students wish to commit. As an estimate, it could be anywhere from one to five hours a week. Volunteer officers hold unpaid elected positions and continue with their studies during their time in office.  

Both those who are elected as Volunteer Officers and Sabbatical Officers are representatives for your student voice and act on your behalf in the Union, University and wider community fighting for you on an institutional, local, and national level. 

About the Role 

The ABMO Students Officer acts as the primary student representative of Asian, Black, Mixed and Other students at Solent within the university, Students’ Union and wider community. They ensure that ABMO students' voices are heard on the issues they face and that they are considered in decision-making at Solent University. 

What you can be involved in  

The Union holds regular events and conducts regular campaigns which you are encouraged to be involved in. You can also hold your own events and run your own campaigns with support from us. 

Past campaigns that we’ve run:  

  • Reclaim the Night  

  • Men’s Mental Health  

  • Period Poverty  

Events that we’ve held:  

  • Drag Bingo  

  • Multicultural Week  

  • Spring Fete 

Campaigning for change is at the heart of this role, so we are here to train and support you through the process. 

What we expect from you 

Campaigning 

You will be expected to represent the voice of ABMO students across Solent University. You will be involved in campaigns to support and promote the voice of your peers. This can be done with fellow Volunteer Officers, Sabbatical Officers and with support from Student Union Staff. 

Student Council 

All Volunteer Officers are expected to attend monthly Student Council Meetings. An official student council meeting is where decisions are made, ones that require a formal vote and record, for example; budget approvals, verifying officer election results, changes to the constitution or other policies. You will be expected to share updates on your work, question the reports submitted by Sabbatical Officers, question motions submitted and vote. The overall purpose is to ensure that Solent Students’ Union follows our students’ beliefs and values. 

Annual General Meeting 

The Annual General Meeting is open to all Solent students to attend. This is where Sabbatical Officers are held accountable for their work over the academic year. All students can also: 

  • Share any concerns  

  • Question any submitted reports 

  • Question any submitted motions 

  • Vote on reports and motions 

  • Share views on Union activities 

  • Question Trustees 

What you can expect from us 

Solent Students’ Union will provide regular support and advice throughout your time as a Volunteer Officer. We will: 

  • Provide Induction Training to the role as ABMO Students Officer 

  • Provide support and advice with Campaigning 

  • Connect you with key people to make an impact 

  • Attend all Student Council Meetings and provide guidance 

  • Provide weekly drop-ins with the Student Voice Coordinator so that there is dedicated time for support with your work. 

  • Provide monthly Volunteer Officer Catch Ups so that you can connect with other Volunteer Officers and Sabbatical Officers.

The Carers Students’ Officer acts as the primary representative of all students responsible for looking after dependents (e.g. relatives and children) at Solent University within the university, Students’ Union and wider community. They ensure that the voices of all carers are heard on the issues they face and that their voices are taken into account in decision making at Solent University.

You'll be responsible for representing students within the Faculty of Business, Law and Digital Technologies , on issues affecting multiple courses in the faculties; this includes providing feedback from course reps and students on academic issues within your faculty. You will be required to attend some university committees.

Housing Students' Officer

The Housing Students’ Officer acts as the primary representative of all students at Solent University on all housing and accommodation issues (e.g. Halls and Private Rented) issues within the university, Students’ Union and wider community. They ensure that the voices of all students are heard and that the right support is available.

LGBT+ Students' Officer

The LGBT+ Students’ Officer acts as the primary representative of all students at Solent University who identify as LGBT+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, etc.) within the university, Students’ Union and wider community. They ensure that the voices of LGBT+ students are heard on the issues they face and that they are taken into account in decision making at Solent University.

They ensure that the voices of disabled students are heard on the issues they face and that their voices are taken into account in decision making at Solent University.
