Main Manifesto

I’m Honour Hewett, studying a Media Foundation year going onto Post Production.

My goals for wellbeing include:

  • Regular mental and sexual health drop-ins: making sure students are able to receive help if they need it. I would work with St Mary's surgery and the NHS to make sure this happens. Better and clearer pastoral care: making sure tutors are known, how to contact them and their availability. Starting in Freshers’ week, making sure students have an early opportunity to have a one-to-one with tutors to discuss any concerns.
  • Stress relief events: ensuring students have a chance to relax during exam and deadline periods. This will range from cheap trips to film screenings to therapy pet events. An anti-spiking initiative put in place at clubs - keeping students and the public safe on nights out. Whether this means training bouncers, getting CCTV at bars or having somewhere you can go and someone to talk to if you think you’ve been spiked.
  • Physical health awareness: demonstrating the benefits of regular exercise on both physical and mental health. Having free taster sessions with sport societies and at the gym in the new sports facilities.
  • Making services and facilities known to students: advisers are unfortunately not available to everybody, and so the services rendered by the University go largely unrecognised. I want to make sure every student knows about them and that they can access them whenever they might need to.

I’ve not had much opportunity in my life to take on such a role as this and thus my experience is likely more limited than the other candidates. A recent achievement of mine was being shortlisted for the BBC young achievers award, for getting to University despite some difficulties getting here. This is why I care for this position; to give students the support they need and let them know that they can have an effect on the wellbeing of themselves and those around them.

Whether or not I make this position, I hope to keep the welfare of students a priority, and improving the communication between the University and Union to facilitate this.
