It’s Furious, It’s Fast, It’s Education!

Key Manifesto Points

  • Lobby University to open specialist facilities 24/7 around major deadlines.
  • Lobby University to ensure software is working and up-to-date.
  • Better brief, grade and feedback explanation and assessment checklists.
  • Lobby University for more course trips and cheaper printing options.

Main Manifesto

Hello I’m Mollie Tuck and I’m re-running for Head of Student Education. In my role as your VP Education I have been able fight affectively, furiously and fast for student educational rights, revamping the course rep system, helped solved numerous course issues and helped to create a catering faculty at St Marys Campus just to name a few.

As a Film Production student I know first-hand how frustrating it is when the Library is open 24/7, which is great for dissertations and other written assessments but not so much for practical courses/units where access to specialist facilities is need to complete work. This is unacceptable they closed around deadline periods, made worse by the fact that there often are not even enough space available for everyone to work on their projects at the same time during the day.

A major issue affecting students is also the lack of up-to-date software, available where it’s needed. I will hold the University to account in regards to software availability, and ensure at the start of the new academic year, software is fully installed where needed and fully up to date.

I will also work with the University to standardise the way assessment briefs are presented and explained to students. This may also include introducing assessment checklists alongside briefs which clearly identify tasks that need to be completed to get marks. I will also work with the university to ensure consistent and useful feedback is given for all assessments’ within the 4-week marking period.

I will also lobby the University to support and fund additional course/ sport trips across the University, as well as support, promote and further develop a cheaper printing service for all students within the Union. Solent University is such a diverse campus, with film makers, game designers through to lawyers, nurses and sport scientist. Whatever course you are here to study I promise to fight by your side to ensure you have the most up-to-date software across campus, have specialist facilities open longer hours around deadlines and campaign to bring the price of printing down.

It’s Furious, It’s Fast, It’s Education!

Questions & Answers

1. How would you help build a community of students at Solent University?

I believe that societies are at the heart of what makes a University special, and over the past 3 years have been an active society committee member. I would want to help support and develop new and exciting academic societies, to empower students to be able to organise more course trips and group socials.

2. What types of events for students would you like to see on campus?

I would like to see more career lead events where students can meet and learn things from well-known people in their industry. I would also like to see more events that students actually want such as (but not limited to); with animals, social media and music. I would also want to see more sporting events for students to get involved in and see our teams play (and hopefully win varsity)

3. What improvements would you push for catering facilities on campus?

This year I have helped to support the University in creating catering facilities at the St Marys campus which is something the Cadets have been asking for a while. I hope to continue to push that so that it will be ready before the start of the new academic year. I want to push for more inclusivity in food choices such as (but not limited too): gluten, nut and dairy free products as well as making sure they fit with students budgets.

4. How would you make the university and Students’ Union more inclusive?

I would want to work with liberation officers to create safe space committees where students and staff can come together, discuss issues and be a driver for change at Solent. By empowering more groups to speak up and be heard at Solent, we can create a fully inclusive and positive campus.
