Your Voice Represented!

Key Manifesto Points

  • Affordable on campus food and drink, greater access to microwaves.
  • More social spaces and relaxed areas with longer opening hours.
  • A more prominent and present Union, with greater engagement.
  • An easier feedback system, to ensure your voice is heard.

Main Manifesto

Hello, my name is Grace, I am a final year Tourism Student and I am running to be your Head of Student Voice.

I am running because I want everybody to have a positive and memorable university experience, and I feel like a good Student’s Union is a key part of that. I'd love to represent you, the things you care about, and help make your experience the best it can be.

I want to look into making it cheaper to eat on campus with more affordable deals, more microwaves accessible to students, and to look into getting cheaply available hot water. I feel these would be an especially useful addition in the library and SM building as current resources are more limited than across the rest of the university.

I also want to make more social spaces available around the university, in particular in the evenings for use by societies and clubs, as well as having more in the way of places where you can rest or study between lectures.

As your Head of Student Voice, I would strive to make it as simple as possible to be heard by, represented by, and involved with the Student’s Union here at Solent. I feel having more approachable Sabbatical Officers would promote a sense of community and I would potentially explore the idea of Sabbs having office hours as I feel it could foster this change.

I feel it is important to make the Student’s Union as present and involved as possible within the university and the student body, by increasing promotion of the great things already happening and increase the SU’s presence in places outside their building.

This is my third year studying at Solent, and I have spent time listening to and representing a large number of students as course rep, so I know the demands of representing the student body when interacting with the university and feel I would go a good job of being your Head of Student Voice.

Overall, I want to improve student life, make the student experience easier, and try save you some money.

Questions & Answers

1. How would you help build a community of students at Solent University?

Create a caring environment where students are engaged through events and regular activities, which encourages interactions between students. Improve the relationship between the Students Union and the student body by having a better presence in the day to day student life. This could be done through more events in areas such as The Spark and other buildings around the University. More events in various other areas around the University would engage students who may otherwise not visit the student union. Helping create an engaged student community.

2. What types of events for students would you like to see on campus?

Having attended a number of Students Union events, such as open mic night, it is obvious the positive impacts these events have. I would be interested to see more evening events as these allow students with lectures all day to attend. Similarly, I would like to see some events during holidays and the summer to engage the students who stay in Southampton through these periods and those who live locally.

3. What improvements would you push for catering facilities on campus?

I would like to see the catering facilities offer more affordable deals and offers. When students are spending long hours at the University it is important to have wholesome meals. Another way this could be improved could be by having more microwaves on campus which allow students to reheat their own food, this would be especially useful in the SM building where students have limited food options. Similarly, it would be helpful if there was hot water available in areas around the University, especially in the library as limited food and drink options are available through the night whilst it is open 24 hour.

4. How would you make the university and Students’ Union more inclusive?

I think listening to minority groups, and implement ideas brought forward by them. Similarly, ensure international students views are heard.
