Manifesto

Candidate for the position of Union President- Communities and Wellbeing

Honour Hewett

Your Honour, your union, your way

I’m Honour Hewett and running to continue my position as Head of Student Wellbeing.
I am proud to say I have achieved all manifesto points I set out to do last year. I am particularly proud of Safe Night Out – an anti-spiking campaign focused on clubs and pubs, an issue that effects all of us.

If re-elected, I’ll:

  • Lobby for more Mental health support availability for those who need it.
  • Fight for the Extenuating Circumstances policy to accept online doctor’s notes and records instead of requiring letters from GP surgeries. As most GPs are going digital, it’ll save students money from having to pay for letters.
  • Improve Safe Night Out, pushing for the anti-spiking pledge to be in the licensing agreement (which venues are required to sell alcohol on-site) and purchasing anti-spiking devices, available to students from the SU shop and on SU night-time events.
  • Lobby for a tougher policy on lecture capture – giving students more chance to revise and catch up on things they may have missed.
  • Lobby to sign up to the Stand Alone pledge to support estranged students. The dropout rate of estranged students in HE is three times higher than the average student.
  • Lobby for better and more secure bike storage for students by raising student awareness of the available bike storage and improving current bike parking across all campuses.
  • Lobby for the gym to be open 24 hours.
  • Arrange cooking and kitchen lessons during Freshers’ week.
  • Lobby the university to reduce its food waste by working with the caterers to consider ethical suppliers and reducing food prices when near expiry dates.

Last year, I applied because I truly cared about people and their mental health. This hasn’t changed and I want to continue fighting for students with all the experience I have gained so far.
Since becoming elected, I’ve became a trained mental health first aider and attended multiple relevant conferences over the country to improve my skills. This puts me in a better place to help push for what’s best for students.

With training and inductions already completed from my previous year of being a sabb, I will have an entire year to work on my manifesto and make an impact. Alongside this, I have already established and grown connections with people across the campuses and the Southampton area, which gives me a greater chance at making the changes you want.
