Welcome to Solent! Here are some pro tips on how to stay safe at night in Southampton, brought to you by your SU.

Starting university is an exciting time—new city, new friends, new level of freedom! As you begin your journey at Solent this September, we want you to make the most of every moment. That includes feeling confident and safe while getting around Southampton, especially once it gets dark.

We are here to support you, not just during the day but after hours too. Here are some simple ways you can look after yourself (and your friends) during those first few weeks—and beyond.

Know who to call – Campus Security

Whether you’re on campus late after a society meet-up or working in the library, it’s good to know help is nearby.

 Save this number in your phone: +44 (0)23 8059 3311 (ext. 23311)
It’s the campus security number, and it’s also printed on the back of your student ID card. They’re available 24/7 if you need them.

Stick together and stay visible

New to the city? Don’t worry—most students are in the same boat. If you’re heading home after dark, try to walk with flatmates or course friends and stick to well-lit streets.

Can’t walk with someone? Call a friend or family member and chat as you walk. Or better yet, use Strut Safe: a free service where trained volunteers will stay on the line with you until you’re home.

Available Fridays & Saturdays (7pm–3am) and Sundays (7pm–1am)

Apps that have your back

There are some great tools you can download to help keep your loved ones in the loop when you’re out:

WalkSafe – A free personal safety app that helps you share your route and stay connected.
Hollie Guar – Another option with extra features like emergency alerts and location sharing. Some features require a subscription, but it’s a popular choice among students.

Heading home by taxi or Uber? Here’s what to know:

Nights out are a big part of freshers’ life—but your journey home is just as important as your pre-drinks!

Use a licensed Southampton taxi where possible.
These are easy to recognise: they’ll have the Bargate image on their rear plate and a badge for the driver. They’re also fitted with cameras for extra peace of mind.

Using Uber?
Make use of its safety features—like GPS tracking and the option to share your trip with a trusted contact—so someone knows where you are and when you’ve arrived safely.

A few final tips from your SU:

- Let someone know where you’re going, especially if it’s somewhere new.
- Keep your phone charged before heading out.
- Trust your instincts—if something doesn’t feel right, it’s okay to leave or ask for help.

Your safety matters from day one. If you ever feel unsure, want to ask questions, or just need someone to talk to, your Students’ Union is here for you.
