UCU strike statement

Solent Students’ Union notes the planned industrial action by University and College Union (UCU) on 24, 25, and 30 November. While we support the right to strike and respect the democratic process through which this action was decided, our main concern, as always, is how this might impact our members’ learning experiences.

We understand these strikes will have repercussions on our students’ studies, and after what has already been a difficult two years, we want to remind all students that we are here to support them as much as possible during this time.

The working condition for academic staff can have a direct impact on the quality of education our students were promised, and not meeting these conditions, including pay, poses a threat to the long-term health of the higher education system.

Solent Students’ Union urges all parties involved to find a quick and meaningful resolution, all while continuing to keep communication channels open so that we can keep the student body up to date. It is essential that all student voices are listened to, and the quality of the education is not reduced or degraded, regardless of the decided outcome.
