What is Black History Month?
Black History Month is an annual celebration of the history, achievements, and contributions of Black communities. In the UK, every October since 1987, we recognise Black voices and stories which are often left out of mainstream history.
Why do we celebrate Black History Month?
We celebrate Black History Month as it is important to educate and recognise Black excellence, resilience, and culture. Black communities have consistently shaped and contributed to music, sport, fashion, literature, politics, technology, science, and more! By celebrating this, we honour both local and global achievements that inspire future generations.
Understanding History.
From the legacy of slavery and Colonialism to the fight against racism and inequality, Black History Month reminds us of past injustices. National Black History Month was founded in 1915 by historian and author Dr. Carter G. Woodson to combat pervasive racism. In 1987, Ghanaian-born activist Akyaaba Addai-Sebo organised Black History Month in the UK due to the lack of recognition for Black History in the country.
Amplifying Voices.
Black History Month is not just about history; for us at Solent SU, it's about listening and amplifying our Black students, staff, and community voices. We take this time to focus on visibility, representation, and celebrating identity, not just during Black History Month - every month. During this month, we will be shining a light on Black individuals who have made, and continue to make a lasting difference.
