The University is committed to creating a transformative and inclusive environment where students from all backgrounds can thrive. To help us to continue to improve our activities, we are using a national framework and application process called the Race Equality Charter. This charter aims to improve the representation, progression and success of minority ethnic students and staff within higher education. This charter’s framework steers universities to identify, reflect upon and address institutional and cultural barriers standing in the way of minority ethnic students and staff.

A key part of the Race Equality Charter is how we use student voices to shape our action plan. To do this we need to have as many students completing the survey as possible – and this is why we hope that you will take the time to complete this survey.

Find out more about the Charter on AdvanceHE’s website.

Why Solent is doing this?

As you may know, Solent is committed to the student's voice and having it at the heart of everything we do. To gain better insight and knowledge of potential barriers or areas of weakness the University needs to gather information using this survey. In order to gain the most accurate picture, the University needs as many students to fill out this form as possible.

This survey is only part of the race equality charter and Solent’s commitment to eradicate racial discrimination and advance race equality. This questionnaire is just one of the ways you can be involved and we will be communicating regularly to keep you updated with the race equality progress over the coming year and seeking your views on future actions. If you would be happy to be contacted to be involved further in this work, please leave your contact details at the end of the questionnaire.

Why should you take part?

By taking part in the questionnaire you will be helping form a wider understanding of the culture here at Solent. You will help us to find areas of weakness that have not been identified previously and to understand how to make improvements that benefit our students. It is important that the University hears from a wide range of voices. The results of this questionnaire will be included in our application and used to shape our action plan. If our application is successful, the application will then be published on our website. We hope you will see your views and ideas reflected within that application and will see that we are acting upon the survey results in order to push forward for racial equality at Solent.
