Every year third year students take The National Student Survey (NSS) and rate various aspects of their University and now they rate their Students’ Union too! It’s the time of year that Universities and Unions receive their NSS results and we just got ours. Read on to find out how we did…
Third year students are asked a total of 23 questions, numbers 1-22 are about their University specifically and question 23 is about their Students’ Union.
Students rate their answers against the following options: Definitely agree, Mostly agree, Neither agree nor Disagree, Mostly disagree, Definitely disagree, Not applicable. These are then translated into percentages of people that ‘agree’.
Last year for Q23 we got 52% (meaning 52% of students agreed they were satisfied with their Students’ Union), this year that score went up to 55%, a 3% increase.
Over the last year we’ve developed the focus of the Students’ Union, increasing the volunteering opportunities we have to offer, carrying out more research into what our students want and working with the University to promote what we’re doing for our students.
Some of the great things we’ve done with you this year are;
Increased society membership by 34%
Held three referenda, which all received more than 300 votes each
Offered 991 volunteering opportunities, equating to 10,600 volunteer hours
Held the first STAR awards (Student Led Teaching Awards)
Broke a European world record as part of Movember
Held our first ever cross campus AGM (Annual General Meeting), which was streamed live between the SU bar and our Warsash Campus.
Here’s what Jane Longmore, Deputy Vice Chancellor, had to say to Christina, your SU President, about our NSS result:
“I wanted to write and congratulate you on the improved score in the NSS for the student union - an improvement of 3% since last year is a considerable achievement, particularly against a sector increase of 2% and it is a clear sign that all the work that you and your team did on behalf of the student body is appreciated.”
