Voldemort, Joffery, letting agents, landlords & how to stop them

As a former student myself, I completely understand the pressure that is placed on students to secure a home, and how this often leads to your fears being exploited by letting agencies and private landlords.

In my manifesto I promised to provide support for all students while they look for private accommodation. This February, with the help of the University, I hosted a housing day with aim to educate and support students with housing issues.

As a Union we’re here to help you get the tools you need to thrive while at University. For many of you, this will be the first time you live in private rented accommodation, and that comes with its own struggles.

As part of the event we hosted a drop in service on the main concourse, raising awareness about the services available in the University.

The support services are:

- Pollyanne Gouldthorpe (Private Housing Sector Advisor)

- Students 1st (For specific advice concerning a personal non-academic issue)

- Samuel Spencer – (VP Welfare and Community)

The housing workshop was a huge success. It was hosted in the Centre for Student Involvement and had an attendance of around 30. The Sabbatical Officers shared their experiences renting in the private sector and it was great that students felt comfortable to ask any questions that they had about renting.

The workshop covered:

- Searching for housing safely

- What types of accommodation are out there?

- Knowing your rights and responsibilities as tenants

- Understanding your contract

We were also joined by external organisations including Liberty Living, The Student Housing Company, Unilife and Endsleigh. They provided information to students who are looking for a new contract.

We would like to continue supporting students with housing, so if there are any workshops or relevant information that you would like us to provide then please email either myself ( or the Students’ Union (
