SU President

I Didn't Choose The Pug Life, The Pug Life Chose Me.

Hi! I’m Naomi, and I am so excited to be your President for another year!

After a tiring but fun week of campaigning back in March 2014, I stood on the stage in the SU bar unsure if I would be spending my next year representing Southampton Solent students. It was an overwhelming experience and I am still pinching myself at the thought that I have been trusted to run such a successful organisation.

I started my role in July last year and it has been a massive rollercoaster to say the least, but I have enjoyed every minute of it and I’d like to thank every single student that took the time to vote for me. I have spent the past year building strong relationships with the university to ensure that the student voice is heard, and I want to make sure your student experience is the best it can be.

Before I talk about what I aim to achieve this year, here’s a little bit about me…

I’m originally from London and moved to Essex when I was a teenager. I studied A-Levels in Media Studies, Performing Arts, Sociology and English Literature where I realised that I wanted to delve deeper into the world of media. After attending many open days, I realised the Media Culture and Production course at Solent seemed like the best one for me and the next thing I know I graduated with a First Class Honours!

During my three years at uni I was heavily involved with Radio Sonar, where I worked as the Station Manager. I loved being part of the Students’ Union and in the future I want to pursue a career in radio presenting.

Now you know a bit more about what I’ve done, here are some other facts about me…

I love jam on toast – strange I know, but I only tried it for the first time when I came to university! I love going on holiday and visiting new places, shopping, musicals, festivals and above all… I love PUGS!

This year, my keys aims are to:

  • Get rid of those additional course costs - allowing you to print, buy materials, software and hire graduation gowns at a discounted price.
  • Create a participation fund - I want to provide you with extra-curricular activities for free, allowing you to make the most out of your time at university. I want to work towards providing you with free course related trips, recreational activities, training and skills workshops and alternative events in the SU bar.
  • Improve Warsash - Last year I spent a lot of time building a strong relationship between Warsash and the Union by running events and getting to know them. This year I want to focus on solving the major issues they face such as better food, accommodation and transport links.
  • Get you employed after university - By strengthening relations between the U nion and business leaders, I want to help find students better work placements, internships and employment opportunities.
  • Housing - Don’t get pressured into securing a home, this can lead to exploitation from your landlord, which can put you in a tricky situation. I want to support both international and home students who are looking for housing by providing them with the right advice.

The Sabbs and I have an open door policy, so if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to pop by and have a chat or even send me a tweet at @solentpresident. Thanks for reading and have a good summer. See you in September!
