TW: suicide, cancer
This year, Solent SU is supporting Solent University students to help raise money for Movember.
What is Movember?
Movember is the leading global charity changing the face of men’s health. We exist to stop men from dying too young by tackling some of the most complex health issues facing men today – mental health, suicide, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.
Since the charity was launched in 2003, the initiative has taken over the globe and funded more than 1,250 male health projects, however the work that still needs to be done is far from over! Men’s health is still deemed a disaster, with the average life expectancy of a male currently 5 years less than women, and for reasons that are mostly preventable.
Some alarming figures include:
3 out of 4 of all suicides are by men
4,646 men in the UK took their own life during the year 2020, an average of 12 men per day
1,105 men between 15 and 34 were diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2020
1 in 8 men will receive a prostate cancer diagnosis in their lifetime
How can I get involved?
Who doesn't love a bit of friendly competition?! If you are part of a society, sports team or club, Solent SU is offering £500 to the society/team/club who raises the most money to reinvest back into their society/team/club.*
If you cannot see your society or sport team/club raising money but want to beat other societies/teams AND raise money for a good cause, please ask your president or captain to set up an account on the Movember page and showcase your hard work!
Alongside this, individual students can also get involved in the fundraising! The student who raises the most money will receive an award at our annual Union Awards in 2024!
*The money will only be rewarded provided that more than £500 is raised for Movember by Solent University students. If £500 is not reached, the society/club/team who raises the most will be rewarded with £50.
How can I fundraise?
You don't just have to grow a moustache to raise money - there are plenty of ways to get involved and support each other. Think outside the box! Here are some ideas:
- Run an open mic night
- Shave your hair
- Climb a mountain
- Walk-a-thon or ride-a-thon
- Battle of the bands
- Beat the goal keeper
The list can go on!
