The National Union of Students is a voluntary membership organisation which makes a real difference to the lives of students and its member students unions.
The NUS are a confederation of 600 unions, amounting to more than 95 per cent of all higher and further education unions in the UK. Through their member students' unions, they represent the interests of more than seven million students. They defend and extend the rights of students and develop and champion strong students unions.
The NUS have three core values:
We believe there should be equality of opportunity for everyone to participate fully in a society that celebrates diversity
Our policies and priorities must be student-led and students union-focused through building open, transparent and accessible democratic structures that increase performance and strengthen accountability
Students and students’ unions are more effective when they organise together locally, nationally and internationally. Unity is our strength.
National Conference is the sovereign policy-making body of NUS and brings together nearly a thousand delegates from students' unions across the country to discuss, debate and vote on motions and elect the political leadership of the organisation for the year ahead. Each year, Solent Students' Union sends 3 delegates to this conference, to represent the views and voices of Solent Students on a national level.
