Hey, I’m Abbie, a second year BA Media Culture and Production student here at Solent. Last week Radio Sonar took a trip to Leicester for the national student radio conference! A crazy few days filled with radio and one (or two?) drinks! ??
The Radio Sonar team are lucky enough to be a part of the Student Radio Association, which means we get to attend some amazing events over the year like the national student radio awards and conference. All of which offer some great industry insights from the guys at the top of their game from companies like the BBC, Global, Bauer, and even featured Solent Alumni such as..
Chris Huskins from Abrupt Audio:
Chris led a session with his busi ness partner Ant McGinley, which took us the whole way through making and even publishing a podcast! You can listen to it here and while you’re there why not subscribe? It was a pretty productive 40 minutes with some very strange confessions if you ask me..
Now, these guys may not be Solent Alumni, but boy do they have some amazing and inspirational stories to tell! With over 30 speakers, I could go on and on, but (rather helpfully) DemonFM have created podcasts with some of the amazing speakers and they are all FREE! Be sure to check those out here.
However, one person I did want to mention was BBC’s, Stephanie Hirst. We were lucky enough to have a keynote with Stephanie where she told us about her journey of transitioning into a Women whilst battling the pressure and thoughts of her massive Hit40UK listenership. It was a truly touching story and one that resonated with our team. So be sure to check that podcast out!
We also elected in the new SRA committee and I’m delighted to say that Radio Sonar’s previous Station Manager and former Solent SU President Naomi Oiku is now Chair, current Station Manager Adam Powney is now the Training and Development Officer and I am now the South East Regional Officer. So if you want to know more about getting involved with radio, be sure to drop us a tweet!
Thank you to our Student Union for supporting Radio Sonar in attending the event, DemonFM and De Montfort University for hosting the conference and most importantly SRA for creating a platform for students to get into and excited about radio!
Until next year.. ????
Abbie Brock
