On July 1st I took over from Sam Spencer as VP Welfare & Community. The week leading up to this was full of meetings, introductions and all sorts of other sessions with Sam and the other Sabbatical Officers. Although it was kind of overwhelming, it was the first time I really came to terms with the fact that this was my role, my job for the next year.

Being elected into a position is strange, there’s no interview process, no taxing work over a CV and stressing about what to wear to interviews. You nominate yourself, you campaign, you find out the result… and then you wait. The waiting was the strangest part.

Without the students at Solent I wouldn’t have this position, and that’s crazy. It wasn’t a team of HR staff who decided I was the right person, it was YOU, the students.

I’ll be running around campus over the next year, and although the Sabbatical team are based in an office in the Students Union, I’ll probably spend most of my life in Starbucks because I cannot survive without coffee! I’m always happy to stop and chat to you though, so if you see my colourful hair walking past, feel free to say hi!

My role covers everything that you could think of in relation to welfare & community! I’m focused on student wellbeing, mental health, housing, finances, sexual health and building bigger links in the community for our students. I’m always here to chat about any of these issues, and I have a good knowledge of all the services that can help if you need them!

As someone who’s overly organised, obsessed with lists and spends too much money on stationary to write said lists, I’m already planning a lot for the next academic year, based on what I set out in my manifesto. But I can and will try and do more, with your help! I’m happy to hear any idea and I’ve already got a few students ideas noted down to try and help with events and campaigns they want to run, because that’s kind of the point of being a Sabb. I want to be able to help YOU.

With the help of Megan, Lewis and Marko, we’ll have an amazing academic year and we can’t wait to meet you next month!
