Purpose of the post:

Responsible for the support and development of all Union societies. Representing students on all matters relating to employability and enhancing students’ time at University. To act as a Trustee and Director of the Students’ Union.

Role Specific Responsibilities

• To be the lead representative of the Union to the University and other relevant external bodies on matters concerning student employability including placements and work experience.
• To be the lead representative of the Union on matters concerning opportunities to enhance students time at University, including; societies and other opportunities.
• To be the lead point of contact for charities, including charitable events, fundraising, volunteering, as well as community and national events.
• To liaise with the University, other institutions, the National Union of Students (NUS) and any other relevant legislative or regulatory bodies on behalf of the student membership on issues relating to student employability and engagement.
• To work closely with the Chief Executive on matters relating to student employability and engagement and provide advice to the University on behalf of the Students’ Union and the student membership on areas for improvement.
• To be the lead Officer for ensuring effective Union activity regarding societies and student led activities and volunteering opportunities, including ensuring effective promotion of these activities.
• To assume the role of Co-Director of Sonar Media for all Sonar Media output (TV, Radio, Film and Magazine), including the right to alter, withdraw or remove content which is deemed a risk to the reputation of the Union.
• To ensure that all societies operate in accordance with the policies of the Union, including financial procedures.
• To lead and support liberation societies and related activities in the event that a committee is not elected.
• In partnership with the appropriate staff member, plan and deliver training to all society committee members and volunteers to a high standard.
• To take responsibility for running campaigns relating to the enhancement of employability and engagement opportunities.

Sabbatical officer general role responsibilities

• To liaise with the University, other institutions, the National Union of Students (NUS) and any other relevant legislative or regulatory bodies on behalf of the student membership.
• To take responsibility for running any priority campaign not undertaken by any student officer.
• To attend relevant local and national conferences, training events and meetings as required.
• To represent student members and the Students’ Union at relevant University meetings or working groups.
• To represent the Students’ Union at and open the annual Graduation ceremonies of their term of office.
• To be the main point of contact for both student and external media enquiries, in relation to their mandated area.
• To identify and raise any issues relating to students.
• To campaign for the rights of students.
• To ensure that the needs of students are reflected through the activities of the Union.
• To liaise with the University, individual schools and departments to encourage student involvement and engagement throughout the University.
• To work in partnership with all Elected Officers and staff.
• To attend Trustee Board and produce reports as required.
• To undertake any other duties as may be reasonably required by the student membership or the Students’ Union.

Democracy

• To attend and provide reports to Student Council.
• To attend any meetings as required.

Eligibility to stand

• You must be 16 years of age or older, be a Full Member of Solent Students’ Union, registered as a student and be studying on an accepted course at Solent University in the academic year 2018/19.
