As a previous officer for Solent, I believe strongly that all students should be able to study without limitations and restrictions and currently at Solent there's a lot more that can be done.
If elected I would like to propose the following ideas and solutions to helping making it accessible for all;
1) A second lift in SJM - currently there is only one lift in SJM and it continually has temporary access throughout the year. All other buildings have 2 accessible from the entrance level. If this can't be done due to space I want to work with the maintenance team to ensure there is less disruption than usual.
2) Students mentoring and access solent - current processes don't always allow for students support to be implemented for when they begin, meaning the first week or two of term there's always an added pressure on students to try and arrange it or lack of information that students may need to contact access solent.
3) Secluded study spaces - currently at Solent students can book pods, however a lot of the time these can be quickly full up. Students that may find the library too stressful working in the general environment even in the quiet areas therefore may find it overwhelming. By offering more secluded study spaces for those with additional needs that don’t need to book a pod, it will make it easier for students to come and use all the facilities on offer.
4) Bookings - Generally I feel they’re not easy to find to book a pod etc, so let’s make it that bit easier.
So why vote for me? After 2 years of studying and already residing in Southampton. I have a huge range of resources and connections in Solent and outside. I've previously worked with the disabilities officer so I can find ways to implement these solutions and make sure they happen. As someone with a physical and mental disability I believe I can easily relate to the issues we have at Solent and ensure its a better place to study.
