On Saturday 5th April 2014, more than forty volunteers took part in a beach clean at Warsash Beach organised in collaboration with Surfers Against Sewage.

The volunteers included individuals from the Warsash community and the local boating club as well as Solent University students coming together to clear the Warsash Shoreline.
The clean was thorough, collecting many shards of glass, plastic and glass bottles, general scraps and even clearing the shoreline of a few dangerous hypodermic needles. The volunteers were kindly fuelled by Joe and Zoe, two student staff members of the SU Diner, who manned a BBQ providing breakfast for all involved. To round the project off, The Rising Sun pub offered a warm welcome and shelter from the rain, serving bacon rolls, tea and coffee for all volunteers.

Vice-President of Student Engagement, Hannah Mullarky, says: “This beach clean was a great opportunity for students to have a positive impact on the community while gaining valuable work experience to add to their CV. Everyone enjoyed what they were doing, and it was a really positive atmosphere between students and the community”.

The project received great feedback from our volunteers, the Rising Sun owner, and Tim Leroy, our Surfers against Sewage liaison, whom we look forward to working with further in the future.
Roberta, Solent student adds: “I had an amazing time, it was great fun, with wonderful people and I am definitely in for the next beach clean”.

Future projects will involve Weston Shore and Netley Abbey Beach (date TBC).
