Since Enactus Society was established, they have come leaps and bounds and have increased their reach in the local community. The Enactus programme, which is endorsed by many well-known multinational organisations, allows Leaders/students to empower the most vulnerable groups in the local community, and give these groups and individuals the best platform to succeed further. Our biggest and most successful project to date is Hunger For Change. Hunger For Change is a project set up with The Society of St James (SSJ), a local homeless charity, to help sustain the recovery of alcoholics through interactive sessions. The project uses the medium of cooking to create a social group that aim to help recovering alcoholics.
Using cooking as a way of recovery, helps beneficiaries increase their self-esteem and develop their knowledge of various concepts. We have delivered 4 interactive workshops increasing beneficiaries’ skills in a range of topics from time management to leadership and teambuilding. We also taught them entrepreneurial skills such as profit and loss, budgeting and marketing.
The ultimate goal of the project is to provide individuals with all the skills required to set up and run their own sessions in the future and give them skills to go onto employment or start their own business.
We have changed the lives of 5 individuals. Hunger For Change has developed our own skill base further, and has been extremely rewarding for us, especially when one of the beneficiaries made the remark in the introductory session, just before Christmas that "it is nice that somebody cares".
This year we have improved the lives of 85 people through our Waitrose Food collection at Christmas. We have set up one micro business already generating £85 in profit, ensuring the sustainability of the project and long term empowerment of the beneficiaries.
Together this year at Enactus Solent we have improved the lives of 90 people in Southampton. We have all worked hard but we know that when we empower ourselves to empower others, an incredible change can happen.
