Great news!
Your SU President, Naomi Oiku has been lobbying the University to reduce the additional course costs Solent Students face; a promise she made in her manifesto.
Progress has been made, and we are very proud to announce that Naomi has successfully lobbied the Vice Chancellor’s Group to add a £200,000 grant to support students with additional course costs.
Pretty awesome huh?! We think so, now here’s the nitty gritty bit…
The £200,000 fund will operate on a sliding scale from a minimum of £100 to a maximum of £600 and is non-repayable. The university are considering all applications, and funding is open to all years, with priority to UK first year students from low income households (under £25k) and receives the maintenance grant. The grant is for students who are facing costs over and above the standard costs for stationary and books etc.
The types of costs considered will be as follows:
-
Course specific equipment e.g. make-up/hair kits; photography equipment; specialist software; compulsory uniforms/sports kits
-
Compulsory course trips e.g. gallery, theatre and field trips
-
Professional memberships/body endorsements and related exam fees (e.g. NCTJ / REPs)
-
Specialised equipment due to disability/specific learning disability or chronic medical condition
-
Final year project costs
Application forms will be accepted from Monday 28th September until Friday 18th December 2015 or until funds are exhausted.

Naomi has worked extremely hard with the university to reduce financial pressures for all students, and will be continuing to ensure that your student experience is the best it can be. She has spoken to the Vice Chancellor and they will be working together to explore more ways to support students.
